An infrastructural spine is essential to tap into the stream of power and development. Analysis of the city-region concept and its modern-day reality will fully equip various stakeholders involved in spatial planning and development with the tools to tackle issues that are bound to arise with urban sprawl and growing metropolitan cities. There is need for policy-makers to fully understand the growing dynamics of city-regions in Africa so as to build adaptation strategies for city infrastructure. Most African cities have a colonial planning background that failed to include further development of cities into rural regions therefore, this is threatening the sustainability of urban infrastructure. This has seen the growing realization of the relationships with the city and its regions as urbanization has led to peri-urban development. Globalization has been accompanied by a new regionalism, rooted in a series of dense nodes of human labor and communal life scattered across the world. Growing populations have been the key factor of urbanization in regions across the globe. This is shifting community linkages that once existed between the urban and the rural regions. This chapter discusses the future of urban settlements and its growing populations, arguing that rapid urbanization is causing urban peripheral developments.
